What to ask Claude for instead:

Then output a brand-voice document with these sections: (1) Voice traits in five adjectives with a one-sentence definition each. The prompt does the work humans usually skip. Most brand-voice docs are written by the founder during a launch and never updated. This version is reverse-engineered from the actual writing that converts on your store, which is more honest than aspirational brand documents.

For a brand that has multiple sub-lines (men's vs. women's, performance vs. lifestyle, gift vs. self-purchase), run this prompt once per sub-line. The voice differences matter more than most operators admit, and a single voice doc applied to a multi-line catalog is the most common reason AI copy goes flat.

Material 2: The single-product description prompt

The failure pattern: a one-line prompt ('write a description for our XYZ') with the spec sheet pasted underneath. Output: 80 words of mush that hits the spec, mentions the brand once, and could be from any store.

The prompt is doing five things specificity-wise: it's anchoring voice via the brand doc, naming audience and use case explicitly, banning the AI-tells that mark generic copy, fencing the claim language, and feeding the AI the customer-language signals from real reviews. Generic prompts produce generic copy. This prompt produces copy that reads like your best in-house writer wrote it, because the inputs include the things your best writer would naturally include.

For an Amazon listing, the same scaffold runs with two changes: the format becomes five bullet points plus a 200-word product description block, and the prompt adds 'include these search terms naturally without keyword-stuffing: [list].' Amazon's algorithm rewards keyword density inside readable copy, not above it.

Material 3: Batch generation across a catalog

The failure pattern: running the single-product prompt 200 times manually, getting bored at SKU 12, and pasting in vendor copy for the rest.

For catalog runs, you batch. The fastest path that doesn't require code:

Claude's context window handles 20 to 30 SKUs per batch comfortably. ChatGPT's varies by tier. Run a batch, paste the output back into your master sheet, run the next batch. A 500-SKU catalog goes from a six-week project to a four-hour afternoon.

The constraint that protects quality: the 'INSUFFICIENT DATA' fallback. AI will fabricate detail if you let it. Tell it not to, and a missing-data SKU becomes a flag for your merchandising team to fill in the spec, not a hallucinated description that gets you an FTC complaint about a feature your product doesn't have.

For a brand running a multi-channel catalog (Shopify + Amazon + their own DTC site + Faire wholesale), run the batch three or four times with different format constraints in the prompt. Same input, different output shapes for each channel. The work to build the prompt is one-time. The work to re-run it for each channel is a paste.

Material 4: Refreshing the long tail

The failure pattern: hero products get refreshed quarterly, the long tail gets the same description it shipped with in 2021. The long tail is where your contribution margin is highest (no paid acquisition because nobody runs ads to position 47 in the catalog) and where conversion rate is lowest (because the copy is from 2021).

The refresh prompt that earns its keep:

The diagnostic step (strengths/weaknesses) is the part most operators skip. It's also the part that tells you which SKUs to actually publish the new copy on. Sometimes the AI's diagnostic flags that the original copy is fine and the conversion problem is photography or pricing, not copy. That's a useful answer. Better than 'rewrote 200 descriptions because we could.'

The 50-word variant-specific paragraph is the move. It gives Google enough unique text per variant to differentiate the pages, gives customers a real reason to consider one color over another, and doesn't require you to write 14 full descriptions for what is effectively one product.

The same pattern works for size-specific copy (kids vs. adults of the same product, different fit notes), bundle copy (when the bundle has its own story beyond the sum of the parts), and seasonal limited editions (the LE description references the moment without dating it badly when it sells through).

Material 6: Localization for international markets

The failure pattern: a brand expands to UK, EU, or AU and runs US copy through Google Translate. The result reads like a translation, not native copy. Conversion drops 20 to 40 percent vs. the US baseline.

The localization prompt:

For true translation (DE, FR, ES, JA), do not run a single-pass translation. Run twice: once to translate, once to localize. Native-speaker review on the top 50 SKUs is still the right move. AI handles volume; native review handles trust.

The compliance addition for EU: health, environmental, and origin claims have different substantiation rules than the US. Your compliance review on the EU rollout owns the call. Do not assume US claim language is portable.

The DTC-specific prompts that actually work

After watching brands run AI product copy for the past three years, four prompt moves separate copy that converts from copy that fades into the catalog noise.

Specify the use-case opening, not the product opening. 'Write a description for our 12oz hoodie' is a product opening. 'Write a description for the moment a buyer reaches for a hoodie when the kids' soccer game runs cold and they're watching from the sideline' is a use-case opening. The first produces specs in sentence form. The second produces copy that converts.

Specify the constraint that actually matters. Word count matters less than rhythm. 'Three short paragraphs, no paragraph longer than three sentences' produces tighter copy than '120 words.' 'No words ending in -ly' produces more direct copy than 'be direct.' Pick the constraint that, if the AI got it wrong, you would throw the output away.

Specify the customer language to incorporate. Pull three real review quotes (identifiers stripped) and feed them in as part of the prompt. The AI will mirror customer phrasing back into the description, which is how Amazon's top sellers write copy that converts: customer voice bouncing back at the customer in slightly more polished form.

Specify what stays static and what changes. For variant copy, refresh runs, or seasonal edits, tell the AI which elements are fixed and which change. 'Header sentence and closing sentence stay identical across all 14 colorways. The middle paragraph changes per variant.' This is what makes the output a system instead of a one-off.

The e-commerce compliance non-negotiables

This section is short because the rule is simple, but it is the most important section in this guide.

Do not put any of the following into the consumer tier of Claude or ChatGPT:

  • Customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, or order IDs from your CRM
  • Full credit card data, full addresses, or any payment identifier
  • Identified customer review data (strip the customer name and any identifying detail before pasting)
  • Internal supplier contracts, COGS data tied to a specific vendor, or sourcing data subject to NDA
  • Health, environmental, or origin claims you have not substantiated
  • Influencer or affiliate disclosure language without checking the FTC Endorsement Guides for the specific claim type

Use AI for the writing. Keep the customer data, payment data, and supplier-confidential data inside Shopify, Klaviyo, your ERP, or wherever the data was collected with consent. The brand-voice document, the prompt library, and the SKU spec inputs are all fine. The customer-identified data is not.

The specific compliance frames that apply to DTC AI copy:

GDPR (for EU customers) and CCPA (for California customers) apply to the data you feed the AI for personalization, not to the public product description itself. If you're training the AI on customer reviews or behavioral data, anonymize the inputs. The DPA path with the Business tier of Claude or OpenAI is the cleaner option once volume justifies it.

FTC ad rules apply to every claim the AI writes. The AI will happily write 'clinically proven' if you don't tell it not to. The substantiation requirement applies to you, the publisher, regardless of who or what wrote the words. The brand-voice document and prompt scaffold in this guide both fence claim language. Do not remove those guardrails.

State-level dark-pattern rules (CA, CO, CT, others) apply if you use AI to dynamically alter pricing or urgency messaging based on customer behavior. The product description itself is fine. Pricing UX driven by AI is the section to watch.

DMCA risk shows up if you generate product images that resemble a competitor's protected imagery. AI text copy is mostly clear of this risk. AI image generation is not, and a separate review process should govern any AI-generated product imagery before it goes live.

If your brand has signed a Business agreement with Anthropic or OpenAI with a Data Processing Addendum, the rules can be different. Ask your DPO or legal counsel what is covered. Do not assume.

When NOT to use AI for product copy

AI product copy is a generalist move. It will not be the right answer for every situation.

Skip it for:

  • Anything regulatory-claim-driven without expert review. Supplements, health products, baby products, anything making a structure-function claim. AI will fabricate plausible-sounding claims if you don't fence it. Have legal or regulatory affairs verify claim language before publish, even when the AI was prompted correctly.
  • Hero product launches with full creative campaigns. The top-10 launch SKUs of the year are where your creative team earns their salary. Use AI for first-draft scaffolding, but the final hero copy goes through human craft. The brand voice on the hero pages is the calibration source for everything else.
  • Ultra-luxury or heritage-brand catalogs. Above a certain price point and brand-prestige threshold, AI-drafted copy hurts the brand more than it helps the volume. The customer expects every word to be considered. Hand-write at this tier.
  • Anything you'd get sued for getting wrong. Country-of-origin claims, regulated-product disclaimers, age-restriction language. Use the official template from compliance, not AI's interpretation of it.

A simple rule: AI is an unfair advantage on the 80% of catalog work where good copy moves contribution margin. Trust the official channels and human writers for the 20% where the words have legal or brand-equity weight.
