If you have generated more than ten things with ChatGPT or Claude or Midjourney, you have already met AI slop. The text reads competent but says nothing. The image looks polished but every image looks like the same image. Same five adjectives. Same purple gradient. Same glass surface. Same vaguely confident landing page that could be selling SaaS, accounting software, or a meditation app.
This post is the practical fix. Five prompt patterns, one image-stack workaround, and a pre-ship checklist you can run on any AI output before you put it in front of a customer.
What 'AI slop' actually is
AI slop is what generic AI tools produce when you give them a generic prompt. It is the averaged-out output of a model that was trained on the entire internet and asked, with no other guidance, to write or design like the entire internet.
You can spot it by tells. In writing: the same five adjectives in every paragraph (powerful, dynamic, innovative, strategic, essential). The em-dash on every fourth sentence. Vocabulary that sounds smart but means nothing specific. Vague benefit language ("transform your workflow", "take your business to the next level"). Sentences that pat the reader on the head before saying anything.
In images: a purple-cyan gradient background that has somehow appeared on every AI-generated hero shot since 2023. Glass-morphism surfaces. Generic stock-photo subjects with the same lighting setup. A "professional" person at a laptop who is clearly nobody.
The reason every untuned model produces the same slop is that the model is doing exactly what you asked. You said "write me a blog post about X". The mathematically average blog post about X is the slop. The model gave you the average because you did not tell it what specifically to be.
Why this matters more in 2026 than it did in 2024
In 2024, the differentiator was speed. Anyone who could generate fast had an edge over anyone who was still writing every word by hand.
That edge is gone. Everyone has the speed now. Your competitor has the speed. The intern has the speed. The fake account spinning up landing pages has the speed.
The new differentiator is quality. Specifically: AI output that does not read like AI output. Output that sounds like a person, looks like a brand, and answers the specific question a specific buyer was asking. The operators winning right now are the ones whose AI work passes a human read-through. The ones losing are publishing eight pieces a week that all sound and look identical because they all came out of the same untuned prompt.
There is one more shift. Buyers can now smell AI slop from across the room. A homepage that reads as AI is now a negative signal, not a neutral one. Slop costs you trust before you ever get to the pitch.
The five prompt patterns that fix 80% of slop
Five patterns. Use them stacked, not one at a time.
1. The banned-words list
Paste a list of AI-tell words at the end of every prompt and tell the model not to use them. This single move cleans up 30 to 40 percent of slop on its own.

Before, with no ban list, prompt "write a one-paragraph intro about AI for accountants":
In today's fast-paced world, accountants must leverage cutting-edge AI tools to streamline their workflows and unlock unprecedented efficiency. By harnessing the power of artificial intelligence, accounting professionals can transform their practice and elevate client outcomes in this rapidly evolving landscape.
After, same prompt with the ban list appended:
Most accounting work is pattern-matching against rules. AI is good at pattern-matching against rules. The accountants who put even a basic AI workflow in front of their bookkeeping or tax-prep this year are getting the same work done in a third of the time, which means they can take more clients or charge the same and go home earlier.
Same model. Same topic. The second one was not written by a human, but it does not announce itself as AI.
2. The voice anchor
Paste 2 or 3 short examples of writing that already sounds like you, and tell the model to match the rhythm, sentence length, and vocabulary of those examples. This is the single highest-impact trick if you have any existing writing.
Match the voice of the three examples below. Specifically:
short sentences, no hedging, concrete claims, no bullet
lists unless I ask. Do not write longer sentences than my
examples. Do not use words I do not use.

Models that sound generic from a cold start can sound startlingly like a specific human after three voice samples.
3. Constraint stacking
A weak prompt has one constraint. A strong prompt has six. Format, length, audience, ban list, voice, structure. The more you constrain, the less room there is for the model to drift into average vocabulary.
Weak: "Write a LinkedIn post about AI in HR."
Stacked: "Write a LinkedIn post for HR directors at companies with 50 to 500 employees. 120 to 150 words. Open with a specific number, not a generalization. One concrete example. No questions. No hashtags. No em-dashes. End with a flat statement, not a CTA. Match the voice anchor below."
The stacked version produces output you might actually publish. The weak version produces slop.
4. Negative examples
Show the model what bad output looks like and tell it not to produce that. This works because you are giving the model something specific to avoid, not just something to chase.
Here is the kind of output I do NOT want:
"In today's competitive landscape, businesses must leverage
AI to streamline operations and unlock new efficiencies."
That sentence is generic, uses banned words, and says nothing
specific. Do not write anything that sounds like that.
Negative examples are especially useful for tone. If you cannot describe what you want in the abstract, paste an example of what you do not want and the model will move away from it.
5. Structured output
Force the model to fill in a specific shape so it cannot ramble into average vocabulary. Instead of "write a blog intro", say:
Output exactly four sentences:
1. A specific number or a specific claim.
2. A counter-observation that complicates the first sentence.
3. The reason this matters right now (one specific cause).
4. A flat statement of what the rest of the post will do.
When the model has to fit into a structure that small, it cannot fall back on filler. The same trick works for headlines (specify syllable count and forbidden words), product descriptions (specify exact bullet count and word ranges per bullet), and email subject lines (specify length, no questions, no exclamation points).
The image fix: why every AI-generated image looks like the same image
The image problem is harder than the text problem because most people cannot describe a visual style with the precision they describe writing. So the default kicks in. The default is a purple-cyan gradient, a glass card, a softly lit shot of a person at a desk, and a vague sense of "tech".
Three fixes, in order of effort.
First, real-world subject specificity. Replace "a professional working with AI" with "a 45-year-old construction estimator in a hi-vis vest reviewing a takeoff sheet on a tablet at a job-site trailer, flat afternoon light, dusty surface, real coffee mug, no glow effects, no purple". The more specific the subject and the lighting, the further the output drifts from the default.
First-person editorial style: tell the model the photographer. "Shot on a 35mm lens, kodak portra 400, slight grain, ambient room light, no studio lighting" produces something that looks like a real photo rather than a stock library.
Second, explicit style references and explicit negative styles. List the things you do not want. "Not glassmorphism. Not gradient backgrounds. Not glowing rim light. Not generic tech imagery. Not purple. Not cyan."
Third, combine tools with different bias profiles. The Google Stitch and Claude Design videos that have been circulating recently are useful as a thought experiment, even if you do not adopt the specific stack. The principle is right: when one tool's default is glassy purple SaaS and another tool's default is photo-real grain, you can use one to do layout and the other to do imagery so the two biases do not compound. Treat the tool as one input. Do the composition yourself.
When to escalate from generic AI to a real specialist
The honest answer: AI slop is cheap to produce and 10 times more expensive to fix than it would be to do well the first time. There are jobs where you should not use a generic tool at all.
Specific signals that you have crossed the line:
You have spent more than 30 minutes regenerating a single image and it still does not feel right. That is the model telling you it cannot do this job. Stop and call a designer.
The asset is going on a billboard, in print, or anywhere it will be blown up to 10 times the size of a phone screen. Print resolution and color accuracy are not the strong suits of generative tools, even the good ones.
The work is brand identity. Logos, color systems, typography. These are decisions that compound for years and a generic AI cannot make them in a way that holds up to a brand audit.
The copy is regulatory-sensitive. Legal disclaimers, financial advice, medical claims, anything where a wrong word is a lawsuit. AI gets close to the right answer most of the time, which is exactly the wrong thing in regulated copy.
The work has to convince a skeptical buyer who has seen a thousand pieces of AI slop this month. The bar there is "this could not have come from ChatGPT in 30 seconds" and a specialist clears that bar in a way generic prompts do not.
A 5-minute audit you can run on any AI output before you ship
Before you publish anything an AI helped produce, run this check. It takes about five minutes for a 1,000-word post or a single image.
- AI-tell word search. Cmd-F or ctrl-F for the giveaway list (the same one you pasted into your prompt as a ban list). If any appear in the output, replace each with a specific verb or cut the sentence.
- Em-dash count. Count em-dashes. If there are more than two in a thousand words, you are looking at AI output. Replace with commas, periods, or parenthetical phrases.
- Generic vocabulary scan. Read for words that could mean anything ("transform", "innovative", "powerful", "dynamic"). Replace each with a specific claim or a specific number.
- Voice match. Read the first paragraph aloud. Does it sound like you, or does it sound like a generic helpful assistant? If the second one, paste a voice sample and regenerate.
- Specificity check. Find every sentence that does not contain a number, a name, a place, or a specific example. Either add specificity or cut the sentence.
- Image gut check. If the image is in the post, ask: have I seen this image before? If yes, regenerate with negative prompts (not glassmorphism, not gradient, not purple, not glowing) and a specific real-world subject.
A piece that passes this check is not necessarily great writing. It is just writing that does not announce itself as AI. That alone puts you ahead of 80 percent of what is shipping right now.
